Own It: Why Your URL Can Save the Day

by Chris Donaldson on October 9, 2009

I had a bit of a setback with The 30 Day Challenge that I’ll resolve today. Quite simply, I’m stuck because I can’t get WordPress Direct to recognize my URL www.fundogcollars.com. As a result, I can’t use the tool to get the site up, and I’m sure sure it’s a user error (I even managed to screw up chrisdonaldson.com in the process, but have since fixed that). So more on that resolve later.

In the meantime, I ran across two interesting stories. One was from a while back, which noted that Jay Leno finally won the right to his URL TheJayLenoShow.com. It appears that a cybersquatter had bought this years ago, and had redirected all the resulting traffic - which was substantial - to his realtor site. Hey, you can’t slap around a guy too hard for trying - though the name was eventually returned to its rightful owner.

The other story was about people taking advantage of misspelled URLs. TechCrunch this week tells about how people often forget the period ( . ) between www.urlname.com. So www.twitter.com becomes wwwtwitter.com.

The resulting traffic here can be huge - check out the story for the full low-down and a fun twist.

This begs the question: how good is your URL? One of the tenets of The 30 Day Challenge is to make sure that whatever it is you are selling is in the URL name. That’s why I went with fundogcollars.com rather than my favorite mydoggriff.com.

Why? For Search Engine Optimization. SEO is king.

But my dog Griff ain’t so bad either. Good boy.

Thoughts?

  • Great point. He should be totally transparent about this. Basically, what he's building out is a course that requires a few purchases along the way: Market Samurai (a Keyword Analysis Tool) and WordPress Direct (a blogging template tool) to name the two I've run across by day 6 - with more to come I'm sure. So he is either an affiliate of these programs (and thus gets a % of sales resulting from the course) or he own equity in each. Hard to know.

Ed Dale - where's the transparency?

My only criticism of the 30-Day Challenge is that the guy doesn't come right out and tell me how I can put money in his pocket -- therefor I am suspicious, and I want to put money in his pocket. I don't expect him to work for free. I ant him to succeed. So, how do I do it?
