Twitter and the Hashtag #Moonfruit

by Chris Donaldson on July 2, 2009

Interesting promotional idea: anybody who includes the word ‘#moonfruit’ in their tweets is instantly entered to win a MacBook Pro from MoonFruit, a company that sells website templates. This is called a hashtag, which is any word preceeded by the # symbol.

What is the value of a hashtag? A hashtag is a keyword or term assigned to a piece of information, sort of like a bookmark that allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. So if you go to Twitter right now and search for ‘#moonfruit’, you’ll find literally thousands of tweets by thousands of users all interested in winning the new machine.

Some could argue this is violating some sacred Twitter protocol. But I say to hell with it. I call it good marketing, and good marketing gets people to talk about your product. It’s a fun approach.

As a sidenote - Twitter just made hashtags clickable. So when you click on #jimihendrix in my tweet, you are taken to all the tweets discussing the world’s greatest guitarist. Another way of finding people interested in the same things you are.
