There’s a lot of things out there that are self-centered, and writing a blog is one of them. Actually assuming you have anything of value to say is a pretty bold step - but a step that needs to be taken. Frankly, I think that most of us really do have something to add to the conversation. So if you got some love, or some knowledge, or just the irresistible urge to have a voice, then go for it. Maybe you’re a photographer. A dancer. A painter. A car salesman. Or a banker. It doesn’t matter. Feed the Id. Be a little vain. Start talking.
Now that you have an editorial calendar and are writing to deadline (4 posts a week? 5?), you can go for broke. You can look under rocks and around corners for ideas. Remembering that ideas get easier and easier, the more you tune yourself into the game. But you have to put in the time.
And if you put the time in long enough, you’re bound to run across the snarky comment or maybe your own self-doubt. ‘Why the hell am I wasting my time ?’ is something you most assuredly will ask.
Here’s three ways to keep going:
- Set a goal. Tell yourself you’re going to write 50 posts. When you get there, double it. Damn the torpedoes.
- Ignore the fact that there are better writers/bloggers/painters out there. There always will be. For everyone.
- Don’t mind the critics. When they surface (and they will), just smile and nod. If it’s a negative comment, post it and maybe even learn from it. Never be afraid of different ideas.
Right now, you’re doing it for yourself. And if you’re lucky and your voice is clear, if you stay in the game long enough, maybe you’ll do it for others as well. Maybe you can lend a hand or offer some deep unique insight. That’s the added value.
But until then, keep plugging away.
Feed the Id.
Ignore the critics.
