This is Day 5 of a 10 Day Course on how to create killer content. Visit Day One to get the full mojo.
I’ve been pushing the written word as the primary form of blog content. In my case, it’s the fastest way to publish and get something out there. But there are plenty of video blogs out there, with people like Gary Vaynerchuk posting quality stuff. Then there’s people like John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing who rolls out podcasts. Even Twitter in 140 characters qualifies.
So content takes many shapes and sizes. Writing complete sentences isn’t even mandatory anymore. So you’ve go to decide what your own best bet is. A couple things to consider:
- I like posting video. But until the iPhone came along, the only camera I had was the one built into my laptop which provides no flexibility. Then there’s editing, compressing the video, etc. So you can expect to spend more time to create your content, at least initially.
- Podcasts present a similar issue - you need equipment and you probably need more time as well. None of this stuff is real expensive and you can be up and running with either video or podcasts for less than two hundred bucks. If you think you’ve got the chops, go for it. Me, I’ve got a face for radio.
- Take Two: When I do shoot video, I need at least three or four takes to nail it. Again, more time and effort. But it sure is fun.
And that’s the key: fun. You’ve got throw caution to the wind, don’t give a damn about all the other blogs out there, and publish. Experiment. Start.
Seth Godin says that a blog forces you to come up with one good thought a day. I’ll take that as the benefit. Whether I write or shoot video or maybe one day do a podcast, the actual exercise is the payoff. If I’m privileged to get you to read it now and again: gravy.
Publish. Do what you want to do. Shoot video haikus or draw crazy zen blogs, if that’s your bag.
Get out there.
